DORIS MARIE (STOCKTON) GARRISON

Doris Marie (Stockton) Garrison, a long-time resident of Tulare County, is now at peace in Heaven with her Lord and Savior.

Doris was born on January 25, 1926, in Weinert, Texas to Robert and Effie Ninnion (Chamberlain) Stockon. She was the ninth child born to what would become a family of ten girls. The family moved to California in 1936.

Doris met her husband, James Haley Garrison, at the old Greyhound Bus Station in Tulare where she was employed. Doris loved to dance and as James didn’t, she soon gave it up. After 46 years of marriage, James preceded Doris in death in 1993.

Doris was a homemaker raising two daughters until the early 1960’s when she started working in retail. She worked at a Five & Dime Trend O’ Fashion and the Vogue Shop where she retired after 25 years. 

Doris enjoyed meeting new people, waiting on her customers and loved Tulare’s Crazy Days, where Tulare Merchants dressed “crazy” She enjoyed having fun.

Though raised in a Christian home, Doris gave her life to Christ in her early twenties when a neighbor, Bertha Raney, invited her to a revival at the Church of God on Kern and A Street in Tulare. She was a member of the church for many years and left when she started attending the Assembly of God, until she was no longer able to drive.

During her many years at the Church of God, Doris was active in the women’s group “The Willing Workers.” Known for their fried apple pies, holding pie auctions in her back yard, vacation Bible School and Sunday School Secretary.

Doris loved God, her church and her family. Her hobbies included decorating, shopping, word search puzzles, crocheting and reading her Bible. She especially enjoyed hosting holiday parties in her home for the Prime Timers Group from the Assembly of God Church.

Doris is survived by daughter Sharron (Dennis) Stiffler of Bakersfield, two granddaughters Ashley McDonald, Bakersfield, Chrissy Walter (Alex Yanez) Visalia, and three great grandsons Rowen and Kade McDonald, Bakersfield, Archer Yanez, Visalia and many nieces and nephews. 

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, James Garrison (1993), daughter Beverly Diane Walter (2022), and nine sisters Alta (Polly) Brian (1998) Eula Dotson (1996), Myrle Nichol (1992), Lela Cody (1994), Neva Ludden (2000), Louise Bartelt (2000), Velma Cash (2001), Lucille Chandler (2010) and Wilma Mendonca (2021)

A special acknowledgement to Heights Street Skilled Nursing Staff for their kindness, gentleness and compassion in handling mom’s daily needs, and to Bristol and Hoffman Hospice Agencies – You were all angels.
